Becoming a Big
Why volunteer?
When you
volunteer your time and energy to help others, you feel good. In addition,
University of Michigan scientists have discovered that volunteering also adds
years to your life. In a study of more than 1000 people, those who volunteered
40 hours a year (that's less than 45 minutes per week) lived an average of eight
years longer than those who didn't. Scientists aren't sure exactly why, but
they speculate that the friendships, new experiences and rush of good feelings
associated with volunteering keep you healthy by lowering your blood pressure,
heart rate, and makes life worth living.
In our own lives, each of us was touched by
someone - other than our parents - who introduced us to new worlds and brought a
little magic into our lives. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can do the same
for a child and you will both be forever changed by the experience.

Being a Big

One of the biggest misconceptions about being
a Big Brother or a Big Sister is that one must be a perfect role model. The true
meaning of a Big is being a friend, and bringing a little magic into your
life and that of a child.
Being a "Big" means being yourself, and
sharing the best part of yourself with a friend. Each of us had a special person
who opened doors and widened our horizons. As a Big, you can do the same for a
child.
Being a Big Brother or a Big Sister is easy.
We ask that you plan on being in the area for at least a year and that you spend
a minimum of 4 to 6 hours a month with your "Little".
